Free advice from a mom/photographer: Buy yourself a disposable camera. Keep it in an easily-accessible spot, and snap photos of everyday moments in your home.

Do they not look like a couple of 90s babies?!

Free advice from a mom/photographer: Buy yourself a disposable camera. Keep it in an easily-accessible spot, and snap photos of everyday moments in your home. I started doing this when my kids were 2, and it’s been one of my favorite little rituals to keep me present in my own life (something I struggle with).

I keep the camera on top of the fridge so that, when there’s a sweet moment between my kids, or when one of them is quietly playing by themselves in the front room (like in this photo), I can quickly grab it, take a single photo, then put it back in its spot.

I love film because you can’t review your photos in real time. You frame the scene, press the shutter, then you’re back in the moment. There’s no flipping through versions of the same photo to see which one is the best. You do your best then you move on.

And of course, being the nostalgic ho that I am, I can’t help but feel transported back to my own childhood via the disposable camera and the images it creates. I love that these photos of my own children look so similar to the glossy 4x6 prints that live in photo books at my mom and grandmas’ houses.

Disposable cameras are accessible. Easy to operate. You don’t have to spend a ton of money or know your way around complicated camera settings. You just feel a moment, and you capture it. Then days, or weeks, or years later, you develop that film & surprise yourself with the results.

Thank me later. :)
